Eight Young Artists Invade Deer Isle

The gWatson Gallery has invited eight emerging young artists to spend a week painting on Deer Isle. At the end of the week, the Gallery will present the results of the week’s work. The opening reception will be held on Friday, July 31 and the exhibit will continue through Thursday, August 6.
The thread which connects these artists is their shared experience in undergraduate and graduate painting programs. Four have BFA degrees from Indiana University and three have recently graduated from the MFA program at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Two have MFAs from the University of New Hampshire, and the MFA programs at University of Pennsylvania, American University and the University of Maryland are also represented.
Victoria Barnes, daughter of the painters Robert Barnes and Nancy Morgan Barnes, assisted the Gallery in the organization of this exhibit. She has a MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and lives and teaches in Philadelphia. Also from the Pennsylvania Academy are Tim Conte and Aaron Lubrick. Others in the group include Nichole McCormick who teaches at the College of William and Mary, Matt Klos who teachers at Anne Arundel Community College in Baltimore, Megan Cox who lives and teaches in Philadelphia, Lindy Carroll from Rollinsford, NH and Erin Raddeke from Washington, DC.
Except for Lindy Carroll, the painters in this group are not primarily landscape painters. They define themselves as figure painters and painters of still life. The opportunity to spend a week painting the Deer Isle landscape will result in some fresh paintings that capture the landscape in new ways.
In 2009, the gWatson Gallery started the season off with Consider the Lobster, paintings and works on paper inspired by Maine's Iconic Crustacean. The end of the month the gallery was filled with some of Jon Imber's work on display and the work of eight young artist's.
